Did Betsy Ross Design the Betsy Ross Flag?

Probably not. The Betsy Ross flag design is a popular part of the American legend, being horizontal stripes with five pointed stars arranged in a circle. Many children learn of Betsy Ross designing and sewing it in history class. But, as always, the truth is more complicated. There is very little evidence of Betsy Ross sewing the flag, much less designing it, a legend that doesn't appear until a century after the American Revolution.

The Union Jack

The Union Jack, also called the Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. Given the United Kingdom's prolific colonization, the flag shows up in many other countries in territories. It is used in the state flag of Hawaii and has official status in Canada. The flag has its origins in 1606 when England, Scotland, and Ireland were united. The modern flag was created in 1801.

Jihadist Flags

Jihadist groups have used flags, generally black with the shahada, for decades. Most recently, the black flag of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, commonly known as ISIS, has gained attention. This flag has been banned in several countries for non-educational purposes.

Flags of the Confederacy

By leaving the union, the confederate states were establishing their own nation and one way a nation can assert itself is through its flags. During the Civil War, some states would change their flags to demonstrate their allegiance and the new nation would make many of its own flags.
